The importance of having an up to date Will

The importance of having an up to date valid Will can never be under-estimated. A recent case demonstrates why.

Wards Solicitors was instructed to act for clients in the purchase of a property. As part of the Conveyancing service, we advised the clients of the importance of having Wills. They took our advice and made new Wills at the same time as the property transaction completed. Shortly after completion the husband died leaving a wife and two small children.

All too often, when we advise clients of the need to make a Will, we hear statements like "I don't need to worry about that yet"; "nothing will happen to me for years" or "we will sort that out at a later date" (and then never do).

This case highlights that the unexpected can happen. Our client was fit and healthy and had a young family, his death was completed unexpected.

Having taken our advice, the grieving family may have been able to take some small comfort from knowing there was a Will, detailing his wishes and making life just that little bit more straight forward at a very traumatic time.

We urge all existing and new clients to make and review Wills, when they contact us for other legal services.
