Improving care for Bristol’s heart patients – thanks to our local NHS charity appeal

Patients at the Bristol Heart Institute are to get a special boost with access to the latest technology aimed at not only speeding their recovery but helping them feel less isolated whilst in hospital too.

It's all thanks to the Big Bristol Give NHS70 campaign, part of the Above & Beyond appeal, which raised more than £7,000 in public donations for the city's hospitals in July, a figure Wards Solicitors was more than delighted to match.

The total donated will be used to provide tablet computers for patients at the Bristol Heart Institute (BHI). These can be used by individuals to download physiotherapy exercises tailored specifically for them which can then be done whilst lying down in bed.

Speeding up recovery times

Research has shown that doing these exercises early on in the post-operative period improves the chance of a successful recovery.

The tablets will also enable patients, often in hospital for a long period of time, to have contact with the outside world via internet and email access as well as listen to music and the radio and watch television programmes and films.

Making an impact

Edd Smith, Above & Beyond's Corporate Partnerships and Community Fundraising Manager, says: "We are delighted to have the support of Wards Solicitors, who are providing vital funds for the Bristol Heart Institute and for our BHI Appeal, and so pleased to be able to use the money to make such an impact at this nationally renowned hospital.

"I am continually amazed by the support Wards Solicitors offers the local community and the real difference they make."

The Above & Beyond appeal is raising money for all Bristol's city centre hospitals to help create welcoming environments, provide equipment, support staff training and development and fund research.

Real difference

Jenny Pierce, Wards Solicitors' Partner and head of the Wills, Probate and Mental Capacity Team, added: "Access to this type of technology will make a real difference to the experience of BHI patients and we are really pleased that we have been able to help provide it. Our donation came from the Wards Solicitors' Centenary Fund set up by our staff specifically to support local causes and started over a decade ago to commemorate the firm's 100th birthday."
